Overcoming The Extended Memorial Day Weekend Slump

Memorial Day is here again. As is always the case, the holiday of remembrance heralds in the familiar sights, smells, and sounds of the beginning of Summer. Everywhere hangs colorful flags; suburban fathers wheel out the backyard barbecues, fighting and cursing at the long-disused apparatus as it refuses to light; firecrackers are soon to be heard echoing up and down the street night after night after night; and gas prices inevitably sky-rocket temporarily as punishment to all those traveling over the holiday weekend.

It’s good to know that some things never change, isn’t it?

But there’s something else that I’m sure comes to mind immediately when Memorial Day is mentioned, of course: three-day weekend. A beautiful phrase. Maybe a bit selfish to concern ourselves with when remembering what the holiday weekend is really supposed to be about, but a reprieve all the same. A day off to catch some extra sun, see our families, and welcome in the coming change of season – who could say no to that?

Until that motivational slump hits the next day, of course. We all know the feeling. It happens every time an extra-long weekend or brief break comes around. So how can we put down those post-holiday weekend mental slumps and get our heads back in the game? Here are a few ideas to keep in mind:

  • Schedule a Short Week – You already only have four days left. Don’t try to cram five days’ worth of responsibilities!
  • Treat Yourself – Still not quite ready to get back to the grindstone? Promise yourself a treat to kick off the week and give yourself something to look forward to.
  • Organize and Prioritize– It never fails to amaze me how even one day away can make such a difference in your email inbox. Set aside some extra time in the morning to sort and organize for the day ahead.
  • Spring Clean – Remember when you said you’d take some time to tidy up your workspace for spring? Remember how that never happened? Well, spring isn’t over just yet! Get back in the groove with some office-space spring cleaning to start off fresh.
